A STARRY MINUTE, 2007 –
A Starry Minute proposes to collaborate with building owners in Times Square to turn off all of the commercial signage in the area (41 st - 50 st between Broadway and 7th Ave) simultaneously for one minute. A Starry Minute’s specific duration of 60 seconds starts when the signs are turned off, and ends when the signs are turned back on.
The point of departure for A Starry Minute is the concept of Light Pollution. A Starry Minute is a project specifically developed for Times Square, as one of the brightest sites on Earth during the night, it is an apt location for the project. Katja Aglert envision this ‘dark minute’ in Times Square as a moment to contemplate evening skies filled with stars. The suggested title, A Starry Minute, refers to the concept of a moment of silence or a silent minute, a gesture of respect, or a moment for contemplation and reflection. The aim is to realize A Starry Minute in 2009.
”Darkness is to space what silence is to sound, i.e., the interval”
