Winter Event – antifreeze is based on George Brecht’s 1966 Fluxus score of the same title. As part of an artist and scientist led sailing expedition in the High Arctic, Aglert re-enacted Brecht’s original score by picking up a piece of ice and holding it her hand until it melted. She performed this act every time she went on shore. These performances were documented and later re-worked into the film Winter Event – antifreeze. In the film, Aglert emphasizes the ‘behind the scene’ documentary material rather than the performative re-enactments. By doing so she investigates how material can be transformed through different stages of filtering and how content and narrative are altered, creating new meaning and questions. The work is made in direct response to the site and can be viewed as a critical reflection on the history of heroic and mythological clichés of Arctic travel.
